November 4, 2012, Calgary, AB – The tournament All-Star team for the 2012 Western Canada U-16 challenge Cup was announced on Sunday afternoon and it includes Victoria Royal’s defenceman prospect Chaz Reddekopp.

Three Alberta players, two BC players and one player from Saskatchewan were among the six named to the tournament All-Star team.

Team Alberta goaltender Zachary Sawchenko, is joined by teammates Nick Merkley and Braylon Shmyr, both forwards, BC’s Matthew Barzal, a forward, and defenceman Chaz Reddekopp, and Saskatchewan defenceman Ethan Bear earned tournament All-Star nods for their performances.

Sawchenko, a Moose Jaw Warriors prospect, posted a 1-0-1 record with a tournament-leading .961 save percentage and a 1.44 goals-against average in two appearances, including a stellar 33-save shutout performance in a 3-0 Alberta win over Saskatchewan on Saturday.

Reddekopp, a first-round pick of the Victoria Royals in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, had one goal and three points through three round-robin contests for Team BC, helping them to a perfect 3-0 record through round-robin play.

Team Saskatchewan’s Ethan Bear, a second-round pick of the Seattle Thunderbirds in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, led all defencemen and tied for the tournament lead with three goals in round-robin play.

Shmyr, a Brandon Wheat Kings prospect, tied for the tournament scoring lead with seven points, including three goals, in three games to help Alberta to a 2-0-1 round-robin record and their third consecutive berth in the Gold medal game.

Merkley, the Kelowna Rockets’ first-round from the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, tied teammate Shmyr for the tournament scoring lead with seven points, including a tournament-leading six assists, in three games.

Barzal, who was the first overall pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, enjoyed a strong tournament, netting two goals and four points to share the Team BC scoring lead.
