November 4, 2012, Victoria, BC – On Friday, the Mt. Doug AAA Varsity Rams football team defeated New West by a score of 43 to 14 and clinched their first ever AAA Western Conference Title in the process.

After New West scored on the opening possession, the Rams defense shut the door and Marcus Davis ignited the offense with 2 speculator touchdown runs of 47 and 75 yards. Thereafter, Ashton MacKinnon and Brian Dowds struck for touchdowns of 5, 53, 30 and 60 yards. In between Callum Duke connected on a 32 yard field goal.

Marcus Davis was the leading rusher with 122 yards…on only 2 carries! Will Roblin chipped with 36 yards on 8 carries. Brian Dowds recorded 7 receptions for 168 yards followed by Marcus Davis with 3 catches for 50 yards. Ashton MacKinnon was outstanding completing 11 of 16 passes for 226 yards and of course his 4 TD strikes to Brian Dowds. Great job by the big boys on the Offensive Line provding great pass protection and excellent run blocking.

The Rams defense played excellent throughout the contest, and forced 3 turnovers and registered 3 QB sacks. James Nicholas returned to action this week and led the Rams in tackles with 10. Peter Elwood was second with 5 tackles, followed by Trevor Ridley with 4. Marcus Davis, Mitch Pearse, Sean Waugh, Peter Allan, Sasha Shurvin, Christian Krause, Zach Wilkinson and James Jones all had multiple tackle games. Sasha Shurvin had 3 sacks, Peter Allan had a fumble recovery and Julian Luis (“Wolf of the Week”) and Alec Wong each had an interception for the stingy Rams Defense.

With the Western Conference Title, the Varsity Rams have a first round bye. The JV’s who also defeated New West, will face Centennial this week (either Wed, Thu or Fri).
