November 5, 2012, Victoria, BC – The midget Spartans football team’s three game winning streak was washed away by the visiting North Surrey Bears Saturday afternoon at Westhills Stadium, falling by a score of 16-12 in the regular season finale for both teams.
The Spartans took the field holding precariously onto a 4th place position, with 3 other teams looking for that coveted final spot that gives the top four teams home field advantage into the playoffs. Coming off last weekends 14-0 shut out win over the top placed Whiterock Titans, the Spartans looked to control their own destiny. A win would guarantee them at least a fourth place finish on the season, and a bye in the 1st round of the playoffs.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, the Bears chose not to read the standings and put up an impressive defensive 1st half, stymying the Spartans QB Lowell MacDonald and the Spartans receivers with an aggressive style of defense.
The Bears would strike early in the first quarter with a 15 yard touchdown pass, to take the lead 7-0. Despite a strong inside running attack, and a 60 yard scamper by Spartans Derek Morgan that was called back on a penalty, the Spartans would settle for a Peverelle 23 yard field goal until late in the half when the Spartans would finally back up the Bears on successive first downs and punch it in from the 2 yard line for the major. The Spartans would take a 10-7 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Bears would come out fast in the early going of the third quarter, scoring a touchdown on their opening drive of the half, and testing the Spartans determination. A failed convert would give the Bears a 13-10 lead.

The skies would open up with torrential rains late in the third as both teams would have to ground their receivers in lieu of a ground attack that would see the Spartans struggle against the Bears defense. The Bears would add a field goal in the fourth quarter, while the Spartans would have to settle for a game ending touchback for the final 16-12 loss.

At press time, the Spartans would finish in 3rd place, tied with 3 other teams. Time for the VMFL mathematicians to figure out the playoff seeding. Good luck Spartans!!
