November 9, 2012, KENNEWICK – Austin Lotz stopped all 35 shots he faced to lead the Everett Silvertips to a 3-0 victory over the Tri-City Americans with his first career WHL shutout Friday night at the Toyota Center.
The victory ends Everett’s seven-game losing streak and an eight-game drought in the Americans’ home building in their seventh game in the past 11 days.
Lotz (2-7-0-1) was stout throughout the contest on the way to the first shutout of his career. Trent Lofthouse and Kohl Bauml scored Everett’s first two goals, with Mirco Mueller and Ryan Harrison drawing the assists on both, while Stathis Soumelidis added a third-period to score cement the victory.
Despite being outshot 15-6 in the first period, Everett killed off two Tri-City powerplays and Austin Lotz was solid with 15 saves to keep the Americans off the board. The Silvertips then opened the scoring late in the period as Ryan Harrison rushed the puck around the Tri-City net and sent a pass to the point for Mirco Mueller, whose long shot was deflected into the top corner by Trent Lofthouse to give Everett a 1-0 lead.
The ‘Tips increased their lead just 47 seconds into the middle frame after another Mueller point shot caromed off the end boards and back toward the net, where Kohl Bauml poked it past Eric Comrie to make it 2-0. Everett killed off another powerplay and outshot the Americans 10-8 in the period to carry a two-goal lead into the last 20 minutes.
Tri-City sent more rubber toward Lotz’ net in the third period, but he stoned Marcus Messier on a breakaway and turned aside a number of other opportunities to maintain the shutout. Then right off a draw in the Americans’ zone, Stathis Soumelidis stole a puck in front and tucked it past Comrie on the stick side to stretch the lead to three. Lotz and the Silvertips continued the strong defensive effort to finish off the shutout and earn their first win of the year against Tri-City.
Eric Comrie (11-7-1-1) stopped 25 shots as the Americans outshot the Silvertips 35-25. Everett killed off all five Tri-City powerplays in the contest, but did not have an opportunity themselves.
The Silvertips now have a much needed six-day break before ferrying to Vancouver Island to face the Victoria Royals next Friday night at 7:05 pm. The ‘Tips will then return to Comcast Arena for a pair of home games to round out the weekend, hosting the Vancouver Giants and Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday and Sunday, November 17 and 18.
