November 11, 2012, KELOWNA, BC (ISN) – Fourth year guard Azi Fahandeg-Sadi (Kelowna, BC) led the Heat in their first win of the league season with 21 of his 27 points in the second half. The Heat played against rookie Canada West team, the Mount Royal University Cougars, winning 74-63. This is head coach Pete Guarasci’s first win in the CIS.
“The guys ground out a victory when they had to in the fourth,” commented Guarasci. “We had some really good defensive possessions and we definitely tried to execute the game plan.”
Fahandeg-Sadi had 27 points, four of those baskets from behind the arc accounting for over a quarter of the Heat’s points for the night. It was clear at the end of the game that the Player of the Game would be awarded to Fahandeg-Sadi.
Third year guard Anwar Faza (Ottawa, ON) put up 17 points and snagged seven rebounds. Rookie guard Greet Gill (Osoyoos, BC), was the leading rebounder with eight rebounds.
Fifth year forward Nick Loewen had a strong offensive game with 13 points, two assists, and two steals for the Cougars. He was accompanied by third year guard, Awet Abraha (Calgary, AB) with 14 points.
From 2006 -2011 the four times the Heat and the Cougars have clashed in the CCAA, the Cougars walked away with the win.
“The big challenge with Mount Royal is containing them on the perimeter,” noted Guarasci. He added, “we could be a bit sharper getting to the shooters quicker and anticipating where is the ball is going to go.”
