November 11, 2012 Lethbridge (ISN) – The CIS seventh ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies shot a blistering 57 percent from the floor to earn a 98 – 89 victory over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Men’s basketball team Friday night at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.
The ‘Horns had difficulty containing the inside play of Matthew Forbes who finished the night with 33 points and withstanding the aggressive ‘Huskies defense, ultimately dropping the ‘Horns’ record to 2-1 on the season.
The ‘Horns were led by fifth-year senior and hometown product Julian Spear Chief-Morris who cashed in five from beyond the arc to end the night with 23. Chaz Johnson added another 20, also predominantly from long range. Alex Fletcher chipped in 13 on 4-6 shooting from the floor. The Huskies scoring came entirely from their starting lineup with four members in high double figures. In addition to Forbes’ 33, Evan Ostertag dropped 22 and Ben Baker had 21.
Despite Spear Chief-Morris opening the game with a breakaway dunk, the first half was plagued with turnovers and fouls for the ‘Horns and the Huskies kept the lead for the bulk of the half. Fletcher, however, hit a three in the closing seconds of the second quarter to give the ‘Horns an uneasy one point lead going into the midway break. The Huskies jumped out to the lead coming out of the dressing room until a pair of threes from Johnson, another by Spear Chief-Morris, and a fast break finish by Morgan Duce inside of two minutes, erased an eight point deficit to put the teams even with one quarter left to play. The ‘Horns battled in the first part of the frame, but a Lamar trey tied up the score at 78 with six minutes left and the Huskies maintained the advantage until the final buzzer.
