November 12, 2012, CALGARY, AB – The Heat had a rough start on Saturday and were unable to recover from it against the Cougars, who defeated UBC Okanagan in straight sets 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-23).

Without Nate Speijer (5th year, Penticton, BC) and Riley McFarland (5th year Surrey, BC), the Heat found themselves in unfamiliar offensive territory. However, it was a good chance for many of the young Heat players to showcase their offensive capabilities in extended playing time.

Jim Bell (1st year, Surrey, BC) put in his best game of the season so far, tallying 10 kills on 18 attempts. Joshua Harvey (1st year, Cochrane, AB) added 7 kills on 13 attempts, while Kristof Schlagintweit (1st year, Abbotsford, BC) collected 17 assists for the Heat.

“We responded well after all that occurred last night,” said head coach Greg Poitras. “I’m really happy with how Jim [Bell] and Joshua [Harvey] stepped up.”

Both Bell and Harvey excelled in the increased floor time. Bell led the team with 11 points in the three set match and successfully converted 44% of his attacks. Harvey, playing in his home province, was able to better Bell’s conversion rate as the Cochrane native put down 54% of his attacks.

The Cougars are making a splash in Canada West in their first season. With the two wins over UBC Okanagan, they are tied for fourth in the conference with a 4-2 record. Poitras’ Heat squad are 0-6, and still trying to find their way into the win column, which has been made much more difficult with the sudden loss of Speijer and trying to integrate eight new faces.

The Heat will return home next weekend, Nov. 16th and 17th, to host the Manitoba University Bisons. Friday’s game is scheduled for 8 PM.
