Alberta GBears

November 13, 2012, OTTAWA (CIS) – The University of Alberta Golden Bears return to the top of the CIS men’s hockey rankings this week following a wild vote that saw no less than five teams receive No. 1 consideration.

There have now been four changes at the top since the UNB Varsity Reds opened the campaign at No. 1 on Oct. 9. Alberta took over in Week 2, followed by UNB, the Saskatchewan Huskies for two weeks, and now the Bears again.

Alberta (9-3-0) received 10 first-place votes from the 17-member media panel in the new Top 10, compared to three for the second-ranked Acadia Axemen (8-2), two for No. 3 Saskatchewan (8-2-0) and one apiece for No. 4 UNB (7-3-0) and the No. 5 UQTR Patriotes (7-3-1).

Rounding out the sixth poll of the season are the No. 6 Moncton Aigles Bleus (6-3-1), No. 7 Windsor Lancers (8-2-0), No. 8 Lakehead Thunderwolves (7-3-2), No. 9 Western Mustangs (7-3-0) and No. 10 Saint Mary’s Huskies (6-4-0).

The Golden Bears, who were No. 2 last week, swept a two-game series against provincial rival Calgary over the weekend, 5-2 in Edmonton on Friday night and 4-1 on the road on Saturday. They’ll try to add to their six-game winning streak this week when they visit Regina for a Friday-Saturday doubleheader.

The Axemen also move up one spot in this week’s Top 10 thanks to a pair of one-goal victories in enemy territory, 3-2 over Saint Mary’s and 2-1 against StFX.

Meanwhile, the Huskies drop two positions after splitting a two-match set with Regina. Saskatchewan won the opener 2-1 in overtime but dropped the rematch by the same score, in regulation.

A pair of Top-10 battles is on the schedule this weekend in the AUS conference, including No. 6 Moncton at No. 10 Saint Mary’s on Friday, and Acadia at No. 4 UNB on Saturday.
