Team Canada to take on Uruguay for top spot


November 16, 2012, OTTAWA (ISN) – The Women’s National Team remains undefeated after four matches at the FIH World League Round 1 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. With only one match to go, Canada has secured a top two finish and qualified for the FIH World League Round 2 in 2013. This is Canada’s first step toward qualification for the 2014 World Cup.

Canada has had an incredible performance so far, posting four shutouts and scoring 37 goals. Tomorrow, the women will face their most formidable opponent – Uruguay. The two undefeated teams will compete for top spot in the final tournament standings at 10:30am local time. Follow @World_League1 on Twitter for live results.

The FIH World League Round 1 has provided an opportunity for many athletes to make their debut on the international stage. Angela Lancaster (Burlington, ON), Rachel Donohoe (North Vancouver, BC) and Goalkeeper Lauren Logush (Richmond Hill, ON) have earned their first international caps, while Marian Dickinson (Calgary, AB), Caashia Karringten (Vancouver, BC), Poonam Sandhu (Vancouver, BC), Sara McManus (Tsawwassen, BC) and Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, ON) each scored their first goals for Canada.

Commenting on Thursday’s match against host Trinidad & Tobago, Head Coach Kimo Linders said: “We have met one of our primary goals – to qualify for Round 2. We played a strong game, scoring a number of beautiful goals against our strongest component so far.”
