November 17, 2012, VANCOUVER – Paced by Matthew Law’s two tries and his impressive showing at fly half, Vancouver’s UBC Old Boy Ravens downed Abbotsford RFC 31-10 in the men’s under-19 Lower Mainland regional final on Saturday morning. The Ravens now head into the November 24th provincial final at Jericho Park on the back of five straight victories.

The no. 4 seed Abbotsford were first to go over when full back Alex Parkinson barrelled through for a try to put the visitors up 5-0.

But the Ravens hit their stride and responded with four consecutive tries and put the game out of reach to lead 26-5 at the half. After the break Abbotsford dug in with each side tallying a try and eventually seeing the Ravens clinch the 31-10 score.

“After we got scored on, we really turned it up putting together 15 minutes of non-stop pressure,” said Ravens head coach Garrett Garbe. “We had some great work at the break down and on defence and then our counter attack really took it to them.”

Ravens pivot Law recorded a brace with additional scores coming from Guido Suez, Douglas Del Monico and BC U18 provincial standout Karsten Leitner. Ravens full back Jeremy Gardner recorded three conversions to round out the scoring. Abbotsford’s second half try came courtesy of Joel Nervais.

“The Ravens played a really balanced game and moved the ball quickly. We missed some key tackles and their quick pace caused some problems for us,” said Abbotsford head coach Ryan McWhinney. “But we’re proud of our boys for the improvement they’ve shown during the season and perseverance that we showed in that second half.”

The U19 Vancouver Island championship will be played at Cowichan Rugby Club on Sunday when the top-seeded Piggies play host to the Velox Valhallians. Kick off is set for 2:30pm with the winner punching their ticket to next week’s provincial final in Vancouver.
