November 19, 2012, Saskatoon, SK – On the strength of nine straight points to start the fourth quarter, the University of Calgary Dinos defeated the No. 7 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies 68-66 Saturday night in Canada West women’s basketball at the PAC in Saskatoon.
Entering the fourth frame, the Dinos trailed 56-50. Calgary’s conference leading offence took over the game with a 9-0 run to start the quarter to take their first lead of the contest at 59-56. After the Huskies tied the game at 59, Calgary’s Kiersten Craig hit a long three-pointer to put the Dinos in front for good. The Huskies kept answering with baskets but couldn’t retake the lead for the win.
With the win Calgary completed the sweep of the Huskies and remains undefeated at 6-0. The Huskies fall to 2-4. A night earlier, the Dinos won 73-71.
The Huskies jumped out to a quick lead with a 7-3 run to start Saturday’s game. Saskatchewan led 24-15 after the first frame and continued to lead 40-33 at halftime.
Calgary’s offence came to life in the second quarter. The Dinos outscored the Huskies 17-16 in the third and 18-10 in the fourth.
Jessica Franz led the Dinos to the win with 17 points, followed by Tamara Jarrett and Craig with 12 each. Alex Cole was strong on the boards for Calgary with eight rebounds.
Reigning Canada West Rookie of the Year Dalyce Emmerson tallied a game-high 23 points, while Riley Humbert added 12 and Kelsey Trulsrud chipped in 10. Trulsrud led the Huskies with eight rebounds.
Calgary finished the game shooting 39.7%, while the Huskies shot 44.8%. Calgary won the battle on the boards outrebound Saskatchewan 38-35.
The Huskies remain at home to host the UBC Thunderbirds and Victoria Vikes next weekend, while Calgary hosts the Mount Royal Cougars and UNBC Timberwolves.
