November 22, 2012, Portland, OR – The Portland Winterhawks (18-4-1-0) earned a 3-0 win over the visiting Vancouver Giants (7-16-0-0) Wednesday at the Rose Garden in front of 5,395 fans.

Winterhawks netminder Brendan Burke earned his first career shutout in the win, turning away all 18 Vancouver shots he faced. It was Portland’s third shutout of the season.

The Hawks opened the scoring 12:51 into the first period when Ty Rattie collected a rebound and fired it past Vancouver netminder Payton Lee to make it 1-0.

Although Portland nearly tripled Vancouver’s shot total in the second period with an 11-4 advantage, it remained a one-goal game until late in the frame. The Hawks broke though at the 16:03 mark of the period when Nic Petan took a feed in front of the net from Brendan Leipsic and scored his 12th of the season to give Portland a 2-0 lead they’d take into the third.

The 2-0 lead lasted until the final minute of the third period, when Petan scored his second of the night into an empty net with 45 seconds remaining to give the Hawks a 3-0 win.

With three assists Wednesday, Brendan Leipsic extended his point streak to 11 games, including nine multi-point games in a row. He has nine goals and 17 assists for 26 points during his point streak.

Petan has a six-game point streak of his own, with five goals and eight assists for 13 points during that span.

The Hawks’ next game is Friday when they host the Kootenay Ice at 3 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Coliseum. It’s the first Burgerville Daylight Classic of the season, with the Coliseum’s curtains open to allow daylight into the arena bowl.
