November 23, 2012, VICTORIA, B.C. – Six members of the University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s cross country teams will be competing this weekend at the Canadian Championships, once again held at Jericho Beach in Vanouver, B.C.

The Canadian Championships serve as a selection meet for both the 2013 NACAC (North America Central America and Caribbean) Cross Country Championships and the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.


The senior men’s 10-km event begins at 2:30 p.m. and winds through the scenic Jericho Beach Park, located in West Point Grey on the edge of Vancouver’s English Bay. Racing for the UVic men in the 10-km are Canada West First Team All-Stars Ryan Cassidy (Grande-Digue, NB) and Doug Oxland (Nanaimo, BC), alongside fourth-year veteran Josh Clouthier (Nanaimo, BC) and second-year Cole Peterson (Edmonton, Alta.).

Some of Canada’s best will take their place at the start line of the senior men’s event, including last year’s defending champion and 2012 Olympian Cameron Levins, from Black Creek, B.C., alongside 2012 Olympic Games teammate Mohammed Ahmed, from St. Catherine’s, Ont. The University of Saskatchewan’s Kelly Wiebe, recently crowned the 2012 CIS Men’s Cross Country Champion, will also be in attendance.

Competing for the Vikes on the women’s side is rookie standout Emma Bibault (High River, AB) and Canada West First Team All-Star Brittany Therrien (Victoria, BC). Bibault is racing the junior women’s 5-km course while Therrien will run the senior women’s 7-km event. Among the field of competitors in the senior women’s event is 2012 OlympianJessica Smith, from North Vancouver, B.C.

The 2012 Canadian Cross Country Championships in Vancouver, B.C. are officially underway at 10:00 a.m.
