November 23, 2012, Victoria, BC – The Camosun Chargers basketball teams split their home openers tonight against Island rivals, the VIU Mariners, with the women winning 48-42, but the men losing 90-76.

A full house of fans celebrated the Chargers women’s second win of the season tonight as the home team defeated the Mariners in an exciting 48-42 battle. The results of tonight’s contest leave the two Island teams tied at 2-4 apiece.

Second-year wing/point Ella Goldschmid (Mt. Doug) led the Chargers with 15 points and 4 rebounds. Newcomer Melissa VanDyk (wing/point from Claremont) made a great first appearance with 10 points and 4 rebounds.

Despite making a great come-back from a 22-point deficit at the half by closing the gap to 8 points at the end of the third, the Chargers men were unable to take down their Island opponents and claim their first win.

As the Mariners advance to 5-1, the Chargers are 0-6 at the end of Week 3. Third-year point guard Jordan Elvedahl (Stelly’s) was top in points for the Chargers with 24 big ones plus 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Second-year forward Trevor Schuermann posted 12 points, 9 rebounds and 1 assist.

Tomorrow, the Chargers volleyball teams take over the hardwood with matches against the College of the Rockies Avalanche on Saturday (6 & 8pm) and Sunday (1 & 3pm).

Basketball is back in action NEXT weekend (Nov. 30 & Dec. 1) as the Chargers host the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Eagles (Friday at 6 & 8pm) and the Columbia Bible Bearcats (Saturday at 1 & 3pm). All games at PISE.
