Vikes Men Drop Second on Road, 90-74 to Saskatchewan

November 24, 2012, Saskatoon, SK – Stephon Lamar netted 32 points to lead the No. 8 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies 90-74 over the visiting University of Victoria Vikes Saturday night in Canada West men’s basketball action at the PAC in Saskatoon.

The third-year guard finished the night hitting 11-of-20 field goals and going 4-for-7 from the arc. He also hit six free throws and added eight assists.

With the win the Huskies move to 5-3 on the season, while the Vikes also sit at 5-3 after the first eight games of the season.

Victoria started the game strong leading the Huskies for the majority of the first quarter. The Vikes had a nine-point lead twice in the frame. But with six minutes left in the first, the Huskies went on a 9-0 run to tie game. Saskatchewan took over the lead at 23-21 by the end of the frame and never looked back.

The Huskies led 50-36 at halftime and 70-56 at the end of the third. The Vikes made a bid for the comeback in the final frame outscoring the Huskies 24-14, but the lead built by Saskatchewan was too much.

Victoria spread the ball around in the game with six players scoring double digits. Brin Taylor led the way with 13 points, followed by Kyle Peterson and Ryan Erikson each had 11. Reiner Theil, Michael Acheampong all chipped in 10 each. Acheampong and Erikson led the Vikes on the boards with seven rebounds apiece.

Two more Huskies scored double digits. Ben Baker scored 13 points, while rookie Trevor Severinski tallied 12. Fifth-year Patrick Burns led the Huskies on the boards with nine rebounds.

Saskatchewan finished the game shooting at 46%, while the Vikes shot 39%. The Huskies also out rebounded the Vikes at 44-36.

The Huskies travel to face the Mount Royal Cougars and the UNBC Timberwolves next weekend, while the Vikes return home to host the Lethbridge Pronghorns and Calgary Dinos.
