November 27, 2012, Victoria, BC – The Camosun College Chargers basketball and volleyball teams collected five wins out of six over this past weekend’s triple header.
In basketball action on Friday night, the Chargers split their home openers against Island rivals, the VIU Mariners. The Chargers women captured their second win of the season as the home team defeated the Mariners in an exciting 48-42 battle. Second-year wing/point Ella Goldschmid (Mt. Doug) led the Chargers with 15 points and 4 rebounds. Newcomer Melissa Van Dyk (wing/point from Claremont) made a great first appearance with 10 points and 4 rebounds.
Despite being down 22 points at the half and making a great come-back in the third to close the Mariner’s lead to 8 points, the Chargers men were unable to turn the game in their favor, falling to VIU 90-76. Third-year point guard Jordan Elvedahl (Stelly’s) scored the high for Camosun with 24 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Second-year forward Trevor Scheurmann (Winnipeg, MB) posted 12 points, 9 rebounds and 1 assist.
The Chargers head into Week 5 of PACWEST competition 2-4 (women) and 0-6 (men).
The Chargers volleyball teams swept the competition on Saturday and Sunday winning all four of their matches against the College of the Rockies Avalanche. The women took down their opponents in four sets on both days while the men scored a solid straight set defeat on Friday and a 3-1 victory the following afternoon. Having completed their final matches of the 2012 PACWEST season, the Chargers women are 5-7 and fourth in the conference while the men are in third place with a record of 8-4.

Despite a slow start to Saturday’s match, the Chargers women were able to rise to the occasion and defeat the visiting COTR Avalanche in four sets to collect their fourth PACWEST conference win. Second-year student-athletes Carly Hilliard and Olivia Redden, both from Delta (Seaquam), led the Chargers’ offense with 15 and 12 points respectively. Second-year libero Kelsey Johnson (Woodlands, Nanaimo) had a monstrous match on defense with 21 digs. The following day, the Chargers got off to a strong start winning the first set by 15 pts, but a determined Avalanche squad came back to test the home team for the remainder of the match. In the end, Camosun edged out their opponents to win in four, capturing win no. 5. Third-year leftside Hilary Graham and second-year rightside Olivia Redden led the Chargers with 14 offensive points apiece. Second-year libero Kelsey Johnson had another powerful performance on defense, making 19 digs.

On Saturday, the Chargers men blasted by a height-hefty Avalanche squad which featured 7’0” fifth-year middle Taylor Verboom, 6’8” leftside Trevor Zemlak and 6’7” rightside Curtis Stockton. Fifth-year leftside Garrett Marcellus was Camosun’s high man with 10 kills, 2 blocks, 1 ace and 8 digs. Second-year middle Alex Sadowski (Belmont) had 8 kills and 3 blocks while fifth-year rightside Andy Inglis (Red Deer) posted 9 kills and 2 aces. It was a different story the following day, as the Chargers played through four demanding sets to take down the towering Avalanche squad. Fifth-year rightside Andy Inglis (Red Deer) had a huge game with 23 kills, 3 aces and 7 digs. Fifth-year leftside Garrett Marcellus had 8 kills, 1 ace, 1 block and 10 digs.

The Chargers basketball close out the first half of the PACWEST hoops season this weekend as they play host to the Kwantlen Eagles (Surrey) and the Columbia Bible Bearcats (Abbotsford).
