November 29, 2012, OTTAWA (CIS) – The University of Alberta Golden Bears finally provide some stability atop the CIS men’s hockey rankings.

The Bears (13-3-0) received 16 of 17 first-place votes and 169 points from the media panel in the eighth national poll of the campaign to become the first team this season to top the rankings for three straight weeks.

The UNB Varsity Reds (11-3-0) remain at No. 2 this week after they earned the remaining first-place nod and 152 points. The Saskatchewan Huskies (11-3-0) and Acadia Axemen (10-3-1) trade places at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, while the UQTR Patriotes (10-3-1) once again complete the leading quintet.

Rounding out the new Top 10 are the No. 6 Western Mustangs (11-3-0), up two positions; No. 7 Windsor Lancers (11-3-0), down one; as well as the No. 8 Saint Mary’s Huskies (9-4-1), No. 9 Carleton Ravens (9-4-1) and No. 10 Manitoba Bisons (8-4-2), all unranked a week ago.

Alberta, UNB and Saskatchewan all enjoyed similar weekends, opening with a close win on Friday and wrapping up their two-game sets with a dominating performance on Saturday.

The Bears extended their winning streak to 10 contests thanks to 2-0 and 6-2 home victories over UBC. The V-Reds beat UPEI 4-3 on home ice and defeated Moncton 6-2 on the road to extend their own win streak to six games. The Huskies are now perfect in their last three thanks to a sweep of Lethbridge in Saskatoon, 4-3 and 9-4.

The coming weekend will mark the end of conference play for the fall semester. League action will resume in early January.

A trio of Top-10 battles highlights this week’s schedule, including Alberta visiting No. 10 Manitoba for a Friday-Saturday doubleheader, and UNB making the trip to Wolfville, N.S., on Saturday to face No. 4 Acadia.
