December 1, 2012, VICTORIA – The Oak Bay Castaway Wanderers closed out the first half of the 2012-13 rugby season with a narrow 16-14 win over James Bay on Saturday and moved top of the Barnard Cup standings with a 2-1 record.
The Bays slip to 1-1 while the UVic Vikes head into the break at 1-2.
On Saturday Castaway Wanderers speedster and BC U18 provincial team grad Mike Dalsin went over for a first half try with Fraser Lyle adding a convert, two penalties and one drop goal. James Bay tries were recored by Peter Gillespie and Andrew De Goede, while Premier League leading scorer Dan Kilpatrick notched two conversions.
This weekend’s fixtures mark the end of the 2012 rugby season in BC with the 2013 schedule set to resume on January 26th with the BC Cups Competitions. The Cups will feature regional representative sides Vancouver Island, Vancouver and Fraser Valely . The opening weekend of the McKechnie Cup (senior men), Ruth Hellerud-Brown Cup (senior women) and Dunbar Cup (U20 men) will see Vancouver Island host Vancouver in a triple-header format at Westhills Stadium in Langford. The Senior Women kick off the trio of games at 11:30am, the U20s kick off at 1:15pm and the Senior Men are underway at 3:00pm. More details to follow in January.
