December 1, 2012, Calgary, AB (ISN) – No.9 ranked University of Saskatchewan needed every one of Kiera Lyons’ 25 points as the visiting Huskies downed the Mount Royal University Cougars 66-60 in Canada West women’s basketball action Thursday night in Calgary.
Lyons, a fourth-year Ryley, Alberta native was huge for the Huskies, shooting an impressive 11 of 17 from the floor, adding 11 points in the fourth quarter as Saskatchewan earned their fourth win of the season, moving to 4-5. Mount Royal meanwhile falls to 2-7.
The Huskies burst out of the gate in the first, jumping out to an early 9-2 lead as Lyons was hot from the get go, scoring seven of Saskatchewan’s first nine en route to a 17-10 lead after one.
U of S would extend their lead to 25-10 as the Cougars went ice cold to start the second quarter, scoring their first back at the 5:49 mark as Kristen Docherty converted for the Cougars first two points.
Mount Royal would continue to score, rattling off eight straight points to 25-18 before Dalyce Emmerson would close out the ‘Q’ with a jumper of her own, just two of her 19 points on the night, giving the Huskies a 31-22 lead at the break.
Trailing by nine points, the Cougars would cut the lead to just four with over a minute remaining in the third, as Jenelle Gieske and Annalise Posein would hit consecutive baskets to trim the lead to two possessions.
Up by 11 points with just over two minutes remaining, the Cougars would continue to surge, whittling the lead down to just six, but the Cougars would get no closer as the Huskies escaped with a 66-60 win.
Lyons 25 points led all scorers on the night, while MRU was led offensively by Jenelle Gieske’s 12 point effort. The Huskies were big on the glass, pulling home 47 rebounds to Mount Royal’s 32.
Saskatchewan continues their road trip west, making their way to UNBC to take on another Canada West newcomer in the Timberwolves while Mount Royal wraps up the first semester at home to the University of Alberta Pandas. Both games take place on Dec. 1, 2012
