December 1, 2012 (ISN) – Three goals in the first seven minutes of the game lifted the No. 3 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies over the visiting Mount Royal Cougars Friday night in Saskatoon’s Rutherford Rink.
Saskatchewan leading scorer Kyle Bortis tallied his fifth of the season just 3:23 into the game. Rookie Jimmy Bubnick scored the second of the trio of first period goals at 6:25, followed by Cody Smuk 18 seconds later at 6:43.
With the win the Huskies continue to keep pace at the top of the Canada West standings with a 12-3-0 record. Mount Royal drops to 4-13-0.
Twice the Huskies restored their three goal lead in the game.
Jessie Tresierra got the Cougars on the scoreboard with a goal from the point at 2:22 in the second period. Saskatchewan rookie Brandon Herrod put the Huskies’ ahead by three at 3:06 in the third. Brenden Turnbull cut the lead in half for Mount Royal at 9:53 in the final frame. Kenton Dulle scored at 13:13 on the power play for the Huskies to lead by three again.
Bortis tallied his second of the game at 16:18 in the third.
Ryan Holfeld made 23 saves in the win for the Huskies, while Justin Cote made 33 at the other end of the ice for Mount Royal.
The two teams will battle again Saturday night at Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is 7 p.m.
