December 1, 2012, The No. 7 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskie men’s volleyball team completed a 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-15, 15-12) comeback over the visiting University of Calgary Dinos Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.  

Splitting the first four sets of the match, neither team took more than a one-point lead to start the final game of the night. Taking a 10-9 lead after a big Bryan Fraser kill, the Huskies added another point when a Connor Frehlich attack sailed out of bounds. Calgary pulled to 12-11, but Braden McLean’s attack froze the Dinos back line at 13-11. Once again a Frehlich attack went out of bounds to put the Huskies at match point. Ivan Kartev was able to keep the Dinos alive for another play, but a Matthew Busse tap over the Calgary blockers sealed the win.

With the victory, the Huskies move to 6-5 on the season, while the Dinos drop to 2-9.

Back and forth in both the first and second sets, Calgary began to break away after the 10th point and was the first to the technical timeout in both games. Each time the Huskies’ were able to pull within two points, the Dinos would bounce back to pull further ahead. Calgary took the first set 25-23 and the second 25-21.

Although starting the set down, Saskatchewan battled to take a big 19-13 lead in the third game and a 23-14 lead in the fourth. The Huskies took the third set 25-21 and rolled to the 25-15 win in the fourth.

Fraser led the Huskies with a match-high 18 kills, followed by Busse with another 12. Setter Chris Gilbert tallied 52 assists and recorded a team-high 20 digs.

Frehlich finished the match with 13 kills for the Dinos and Greg Mann added another 11. Cory Meeuwisse recorded a match-high 23 digs.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon. Match time is 6:15 p.m.
