December 1, 2012, Price George, BC – Brett Cote netted the game winner as the Victoria Royals topped Prince George 4-3 in WHL action Saturday night at the CN Centre in Prince George.
In a Saturday night matchup, the second of a two-game weekend stand, Prince George gave Mac Engel the nod between the pipes while Victoria countered with Patrik Polivka.
Jamie Crooks opened the scoring 7:25 into the first period. From the left wing Crooks drove hard to the front of the net before he fired the puck between the legs of Engel. Victoria increased their lead to 2-0 while on the 5-on-3 power play. Logan Nelson fired a shot from the slot, but Engel was able to make the initial save. The rebound was gathered at the right post by Austin Carroll. The Royals’ forward made no mistake as he snapped the puck into the gaping cage at the 12:03 mark. Prince George cut the lead in half with a short-handed goal from Daulton Siwak at 13:12. While in a foot race for the loose puck the Cougars’ forward out-muscled a Victoria defender to gain possession before he cut to the net and fired a shot between the legs of Polivka. Ryan Hanes tied the game at 2-2 late in the period after he accepted a pass in the slot from Alex Forsberg and buried a shot over the shoulder of Polivka. After 20 minutes of play the score remained 2-2.
After sustained pressure by Prince George to open the second period, Marc McNulty gave the Cougars their first lead of the night at the10:16 mark. McNulty snapped a quick shot from the right point that beat a screened Victoria netminder. The Royals killed off a four minute double minor penalty to end the period. The teams headed to the third period with Prince George up 3-2.
Victoria knotted the game at three goals apiece off of a turnover in the neutral zone at 12:25. Mitch Deacon collected the loose puck at the Prince George blueline and drove wide around a Cougar defenceman before he roofed a shot over the glove of Engel. Under a minute later Brett Cote tallied the go ahead marker for the Royals. After Prince George failed to clear the puck out of their own zone Cote unleashed a seeing-eye slap shot from the right point that beat a screened Engel. Victoria 4 Prince George 3.
Victoria went 1/2 = 50.00% on the powerplay while Prince George was 0/5 = 00.0%. The Cougars outshot the Royals 37-26.
