December 3, 2012, Saskatoon, SK (ISN) – The University of Calgary Dinos completed a sweep of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies with a 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 25-15) victory Saturday night in Saskatoon at the PAC.
With the win Calgary closes the first half of the Canada West women’s volleyball season with a 6-6 record, while the Huskies sit at 1-11. A night earlier, Calgary won 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-16).
Sarah Moncks and Courtney Dawson led the Dinos to the win with 10 kills each. Lindsey Doland added another eight. Moncks added 12 digs.
Fourth-year outside hitter Candace Hueser led the Huskies with 10 kills and five digs, followed by rookie middle blocker Emily Humbert with six. Libero Haley Williams tallied 10 digs in the match.
Calgary wasn’t able to break away in the first set until a Moncks kill pulled the Dinos ahead at 11-10. From there, the Dinos kept control of the set and never let the Huskies get closer than two points. At 16-13, Calgary scored the next four points and never looked back to the 25-17 win.
Just as in the first set, the Dinos began to breakaway near the 11 point mark and were the first to the technical timeout. At 17-12, the Huskies rang off four straight points after a block by Anne Hanbidge, a kill and block by Humbert. But with the one point lead, Dawson froze the backline with a powering attack. The Huskies continued to battle and with strong play tied the set at 21 causing the Dinos to take a timeout. The Huskies continued to push the Dinos but Calgary’s strong offence from Moncks and Dawson pulled Calgary to the 27-25.
The Dinos jumped to a 5-1 lead to start the final set. The Huskies were able to pull within one point at 5-4, but Calgary quickly took back possession and rolled to the 25-15 win.
The match was the last for both teams of the first half of the Canada West women’s volleyball season. Calgary will return to conference action at home hosting the Alberta Pandas, while the Huskies will host the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. Both series are set for January 11-12
