WHISTLER – The UBC nordic ski team got its season started on Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Whistler Olympic Park.

The athletes raced in the first Coast Cup of the year – a 7.5-kilometre freestyle race. Warm weather and fresh snow made for slow conditions on the day, but the athletes still came away with multiple victories, showing their summer and fall training has paid off.

First year Kristy Bock (100 Mile House, BC) overcame a fall to win the Junior Women’s Category, with a time that placed her second overall. Solen Roth (Ottawa, ON) placed second in the Senior Women’s category, with a time that placed her just behind Bock, in third. Katrina Dutkiewicz (Cambridge, UK) raced to third in the Senior Women’s category, and fourth overall.

On the men’s side, second year Robert Ragotte (Brampton, ON) won the Junior Men’s category ahead of teammate Adam Woods (Vancouver, BC). That was good enough for the overall victory as well, while Adam Woods placed 5th overall. In the Senior Men’s category, Kris Rhude (Cross Plains, WI) and Alistair Hardy-Poirier (Vancouver, BC) placed 6th and 9th respectively, good enough for 8th and 11th overall.

The skiers will have a brief break over exams and the Winter break before returning to racing for the BC Cup in Kelowna, Jan. 12-13.
