December 5, 2012, Lethbridge, AB – Curtis Lazar notched a pair of goals in a losing cause as the Oil Kings fell 6-2 to the Hurricanes on Wednesday night. The loss drops the Oil Kings record to 18-16-2-3 overall and marked their first in regulation in their last 10 games.
The Oil Kings stumbled out of the blocks as the high energy Hurricanes looked to avenge their 4-3 loss this past weekend in Edmonton. The Canes jumped out to an early lead with a pair of unanswered goals in the first period by Russell Maxwell and Jamal Watson. Watson buried just 17 seconds after Maxwell managed to tip a shot past Oil Kings goaltender Laurent Brossoit.
Brossoit showed some flashes of brilliance to keep the Oil Kings in it in the second. But some tough penalties for the visiting side would catch up to them. Edmonton would give up three straight power play opportunities before Lethbridge’s Sam McKechnie tallied to make
it a 3-0 game. Once again Lethrbidge would strike quickly as Jay Merkley made it a 4-0 lead just 1:09 later. Despite some solid play that would spell the end of Brossoit’s night as he was replaced by Tristan Jarry. Jarry was in tough however as he was beat on a breakaway chance for McKechnie’s second of the night with just 9 seconds remaining in the period.
Edmonton came alive in the third as Lazar notched his first of the game four minutes into the third. Lazar fearlessly rushed the front of the net and put home a nice feed from Ashton Sautner to make it 5-1. The native of Vernon, BC then tallied his second of the game breaking down the right side and finishing with a perfect shot low stick side. After a dry spell last month the Oil Kings top prospect for the 2013 NHL draft has now posted back to back two goal games to start the month of December.
But Lethbridge would end the Oil Kings chance for a comeback as they killed off a key third period power play for the visitors. Edmonton’s special teams struggled as the power play was held to 0 for 5 and the penalty kill gave up two power play markers on five opportunities for the Canes.
Edmonton native Georgio Estephan would score late in the period to lock up the win for the Canes. It was Lethridge’s first of the season over Edmonton as the Oil Kings record dropped to 2-1-0-0 vs their “windy city” rivals.
With the loss the Oil Kings will remain tied with the Calgary Hitmen for top spot in the Central Division.
