December 8, 2012, Nanaimo, BC – The North Island Silvertips came across some tough goaltending from the Kootenay Ice’s Harrison Whitlock and were shut-out 3-0 Saturday in BC Hockey Major Midget action Saturday in Nanaimo.
The Nanaimo Silvertips are having no luck as of late and on Saturday night, luck was not on their side again.
In the first period it was a classic game of hockey, only one penalty given, good hits and some slick moves by both teams but with 37 seconds to go in the first period the Ice’s Trevor Van Steinburg was able to snipe a quick shot in the back of the net.
The second period was much of the same from both teams but at 17:59 Jermey Lucchini passes down low to Brandon Sookro who gives it to Ryan Neil, who gets it past Silvertips goalie Liam Grioux.
In the third period, as the Silvertips tried to get into the game, they had no luck. Two shots hit the post, and several just wide and with less than 7 seconds to go, Trevor Van Steinburg gets his second goal of the night with an empty netter.
The stars of the game for both teams were without a doubt, the netminders, Silvertips #35 Liam Giroux and Ice’s #1 Harrison Whitlock who got a shutout.
Assistant Captain Curtis McCarrick believes they lacked focus in Saturday’s game, “We didn’t stick to our game plan, our heads were somewhere else.” McCarrick went onto say they need to keep things simple, “I am confident if we keep it simple we can turn this around and beat the Ice on Sunday.”
The Silvertips take on the Ice on Sunday morning.
