December 10, 2012, Abbotsford, B.C. (ISN) – The Cariboo Cougars overpowered the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds for the second straight day Sunday and a strong defensive effort and solid goaltending from Jeremy Matte earned the Cats a 5-0 win and the weekend sweep.

The Cougars outshot the T-Birds 34-24 for Matte’s second shutout of the season.

Logan Styler scored his second of the weekend less than three minutes into the first to get the ball rolling early for the Cats. Two and a half minutes later Michael Bell popped in his fifth of the year from Eli Jarvis for the early 2-0 lead. Braiden Epp added his third of the weekend on the power play from Liam Blackburn and Donovan Law late in the frame for the 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Jarvis scored the Cats second power play goal of the game midway through the second to make it 4-0. Ryan Forbes added his third of the weekend midway through the final frame.

The Cougars were strong once again on special teams going 2/4 on the power play and killing off all four penalties.

The win is Matte’s sixth on the season as the Cougars improve to 17-5 and remain in third place in the BCMML, two points back of the Okanagan Rockets and six behind the Vancouver NW Giants.  The Cats are home to those Giants next weekend for their final regular season games of 2012 in a pivotal matchup between the two biggest rivals in the league.
