December 10, 2012, ALTENBER, Ger. (ISN) – Sam Edney slid just shy of his first-ever podium, but topped his career-best result in Europe with a sixth-place finish on Sunday in Altenberg, Germany.

The 28-year-old Calgarian put together two solid runs down the 15-corner track to stop the clock at 1:47.703 on a track he has had success at throughout his 10-year-career.

“Altenberg and I have a thing and it gets better every year,” said Edney. “I am super pumped. It felt good to finally get the result I knew I was capable of all year. “I really needed this result going into our Christmas break because it motivates me and I will be able to carry that over into the New Year.”

A two-time Olympian, Edney has two fifth-place finishes – both on home ice – in Whistler last year and in Calgary came during the 2009-10 Olympic year. He was seventh at the World Championships last season in Altenberg.

“I have always enjoyed Altenberg. We have a great relationship,” said Edney. “I have a lot of comfort on this track. It is known as a tough track, but I have a lot of confidence that allows me to charge and be aggressive.”

The Germans swept the men’s podium. Felix Loch continued his dominance climbing to the top of the podium once again. The 2010 Olympic champion set the time to beat at 1:46.798. Andi Langenhan was second at 1:47.003, while Johannes Ludwig clocked a bronze-medal winning time of 1:47.077.

Later in the day, the Canadians were in tough in the team relay competition. The Canadians finished seventh at 2:25.203. Germany won the relay with a time of 2:22.962. Austria grabbed the silver at 2:23.721, while Russia slid into third spot at 2:23.962.
