Royals Turned Aside by Oil Kings

In a Saturday night clash at Rexall Place, the Victoria Royals squared off against the Edmonton Oil Kings. Victoria gave Patrik Polivka the start in goal, while Edmonton replied with Tristan Jarry.

The Royals opened the scoring 5:45 into the first period on a goal by Tyler Stahl. The Royals’ captain gained possession of the puck at the blue line before firing a slap shot that found its way through a screen and past Jarry. Both teams exchanged powerplays, but neither team was able to convert. After 20 minutes of play, the Royals went into the intermission with a 1-0 lead.

Cody Corbett evened the score for the Oil Kings at the 2:02 mark of the middle frame before Steven Hodges regained the lead for the Royals. Hodges weaved into the Edmonton zone to the bottom of the right face-off circle then spun and fired a shot that slipped through Jarry’s pads. The Oil Kings responded with four consecutive goals from Michael St. Croix, T.J. Foster, Keegan Lowe and Brandon Baddock. Coleman Vollrath replaced Polivka in the Royals’ net following Edmonton’s fifth goal and shut the door in the late stages of the second period. After 40 minutes of play, Edmonton commanded a 5-2 advantage.

In a final period that saw a combined 62 minutes in penalties assessed, neither team was able to add another goal. Edmonton 5 Victoria 2.

Victoria went 0/4 = 0.0% on the powerplay while Edmonton was 1/5 = 20.0%. The Oil Kings outshot the Royals 29-26.

The Royals now head into the Christmas break with their next game coming on Friday, December 28th when the Prince George Cougars visit Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The Royals will host the Cougars again the following night. Puck drop for both games is 7:05 p.m. Fans are reminded that Money Mart Mad Monday has been rescheduled to Thursday, December 27th for these two games.
