December 16, 2012, (ISN) – PENTICTON, BC- The Penticton Vees received an early Christmas present, scoring a 5-2 win over the Nanaimo Clippers on Saturday night at the SOEC. Sam Mellor scored twice on the power-play and four players had two-point nights, vaulting the Vees to their 22nd win of the season.

In a tight-checking first period, Sam Mellor was the only player on both sides to tickle the twine. Mellor scored his 10th of the season on the power-play, as his shot from the high slot trickled through the legs of Jayson Argue at 13:18.

Chad Katunar made sure the Vees took the lead to the dressing room, making nine saves in the first period, a few on point-blank chances.

Josh Bryan evened the game for the Clippers early in the second period on a blast from blue-line. Bryan stepped into a pass from Brenden Forbes that zipped past the glove of Katunar at 2:21.

Louie Nanne put the Vees back ahead midway through the period on a deflection in front of the Clippers goal. Rob Mann put a shot towards the net and Nanne got a piece of the biscuit with his blade, darting the puck between the legs of Argue at 11:32.

Sam Mellor picked up his second of the game, again on the power-play, late in the sandwich stanza. Clippers Kyle Kramer was in the box after he ran over Chad Katunar like a line-backer. Katunar went to play a puck in the Vees zone, and as he did, Kramer put him down to the ice with a shoulder.

On the ensuing power-play, Mellor danced into the right-circle and his wrist-shot darted past Argue’s blocker at 18:53; Mellor’s 11th putting the Vees up by two.

In the third the Clippers once again made a game of it, as Greg Fraser jumped on a rebound in front of the Vees net. Fraser found a rebound after a point-shot and tossed the puck past the outstretched arm of Katunar at 6:58.

Once again the Vees responded, potting two goals in less than a minute.  Jedd Soleway put the Vees back up by two just past the 13 minute mark. Soleway skated into the Clippers zone on a two-on-one rush, and his shot squeezed through Argue at 13:18.

Cody DePourcq put the game out of reach not even a minute later on a goal-mouth scramble. DePourcq, after being denied on a wrap-around, whacked at a loose puck and  pushed it past the pad of the Clippers goaltender at 14:14; two goals in 56 seconds to seal the win.
