Hawks Happenings On The Ice:
December 17, 2012, (ISN) – The Winterhawks have one game left before the holiday break, as they take on the Spokane Chiefs Tuesday, December 18 starting at 7:00 pm at Spokane.
With a league-leading record of 28-5-1-0, the Winterhawks have 57 points, tying the franchise record for points at the holiday break, a mark they can top tomorrow. The Hawks also had 57 points at the break in the 1997-98 Memorial Cup season, when they were 28-7-1 heading into the holidays.
On October 9 the Winterhawks lost 3-2 in overtime in Regina to fall to 4-3-1-0. Since that game, the Hawks have gone 24-2 and rocketed to top spot in the WHL’s standings. The team’s 57 points lead the league, three points ahead of second place Kamloops with four games in hand. Portland also leads the U.S. Division by 10 points over second place Spokane going into tomorrow’s matchup.
Nic Petan has moved into second in league scoring with 58 points, four behind Colin Smith of the Kamloops Blazers. Petan has an eight-game point streak with six goals and eight assists for 14 points, and he’s registered a point in 28 of 34 games this season. Not far behind is Brendan Leipsic, whose 55 points are fourth in the league. Leipsic, who had an 18-game point streak recently, has points in 26 of 31 games played.
Hawks Happenings Off The Ice:
After the team gets back from the holiday break, the first home game back on Saturday, December 29 will be Lift Ticket Night – the first 5,000 fans will receive a free lift ticket to Mt. Hood Skibowl. It’s also a 3 p.m. start with the curtains open in the Coliseum for a Burgerville Daylight Classic.
The Hawks will close out 2012 with the annual New Year’s Eve game at 8 p.m. against the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Rose Garden. After the game fans will be able to skate on the ice with the players, and ring in the new year with a countdown to midnight on the videoboard.
