South Island Royals Buchannan and Pickup Named to Major Midget All-Star Game


December 20, 2012, Victoria, BC – The South Island Royals are proud to announce in partnership with the BC Major Midget League (BCMML) that defenceman Sean Buchanan and forward Cole Pickup have been named to the BCMML All-Star Game in Langley, BC.

Buchanan, a native of Victoria, BC has enjoyed a solid start to the campaign with the Royals, appearing in all 24 games so far this season. The 6’2′, 180 lb rearguard has collected seven assists and 44 minutes in penalties through the first half of the season. The 16-year-old also skated in 40 games last season with the South Island Thunderbirds, tallying 11 points (3g-8a) and 30 penalty minutes.

Pickup, listed at 6’0, 166 lbs, in entering into his second season with the South Island Major Midget Program. With the Royals this season, Pickup sits on top of the team’s scoring list having notched 28 points (13g-15a) along with 34 penalty minutes in 22 games. The 16-year-old forward also appeared 32 times for the Thunderbirds a year ago, where he scored 15 points (7g-8a) with 15 minutes in penalties.

“The South Island Royals are very proud to have Sean and Cole represent our team at the BCMML All-Star Game,” Royals’ Head Coach Geoff Grimwood said. “Both players are well deserving of the honor and they have worked tremendously hard to earn this recognition.”

The BCMML All-Star Game will take place on January 18, 2013 at the Langley Events Centre in Langley BC. The game will consist of 42 players representing all 11 Major Midget teams.

South Island’s next weekend set will come after the Christmas Break when they travel to face the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds on the weekend of January 5th and 6th. The Royals will then return home the following weekend to square off against the Vancouver NE Chiefs. Game one is scheduled for Saturday, January 12th at 5:00 p.m. with Game two taking place the next morning at 10:00 a.m.
