December 20, 2012, Victoria BC., (ISN) – Victoria Highlanders FC announced today that the club will not field a United Soccer Leagues (USL) W-League team for the 2013 season.
“The Highlanders FC organization is committed to the development of the women’s game locally and nationally,” said Mark deFrias, Highlanders FC General Manager. “The decision to discontinue the W-League team does not prevent us from remaining true to that vision. With the changing landscape of women’s soccer it would not have made sense for the Highlanders FC to remain in the W-League for 2013. We are strong supporters of the USL and look forward to continuing to compete on the men’s side in the USL Premier Development League.”
The club will continue to field a team in the PCSL women’s premier division. In the PCSL, the Highlanders FC will have a familiar face as the Vancouver Whitecaps will also be competing for the title in 2013. The PCSL features teams from the Pacific Northwest region including British Columbia and Washington.
“We remain strong supporters of the USL W-League, and wish all the teams in the Western Conference the best of luck as they bring back the cup to the west coast,” said Dave Dew, Highlanders FC director of female development. “The opportunity to realize better results in league play with a team derived from a mixture of young developmental and veteran players is better for the long term development of top-level women’s players. Looking onwards we commit to maintain the high standards of development in the women’s game, and look forward to the upcoming season in the PCSL.”
