December 20, 2012, OCEANSIDE, Calif. (ISN) – “Tonight was a great overall team effort. We had lots of balanced scoring and more defensive intensity, which led to our offense,” commented TWU head coach Scott Allen. “I was really impressed with the way we moved the ball and the assists that we had today.”

Forward Micah Cockrill scored a season-high 20 points to lead a balanced Trinity Western squad to an 88-78 victory over the John Brown University Golden Eagles in the two teams final game of the Cal. State – San Marcos Holiday Classic Wednesday night in Oceanside, California.

Cockrill was an impressive 5-of-6 from behind the three point line on the evening that he hit an additional 3-4 from the foul line and pulled down four rebounds. Cockrill wasn’t the only Spartans player finding the range tonight as guard Mark Perrin added 20 points, seven rebound and seven steals, forward Denny McDonald had 16 points and seven rebounds and guard Justin Bakuteka added 14 points.

The Golden Eagles were led by Coleson Rakestraw with 28 points on 6-of-7 from the three point line, Abel Galliguez with 13 points and rookie Kofi Josephs with 10 points.

Perrin’s seven steals ties the Trinity Western CIS record, which was set in 2007-08 by Spartans Luke Robinson and Matt Myers against Lethbridge and Regina.

Both teams shot well in the first half as the Spartans edged the Golden Eagles 47 to 46 percent to give TWU a slim 42-40 lead after 20 minutes. But it was the second half where TWU pulled away, knocking down 55 percent (16-of-29) from the field to JBU’s 42 percent (11-of-26).

The Spartans broke open the game early in the final half. With four minutes gone and trailing 49-48 TWU put together an impressive 21-to-2 run to take a 69-51 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining in the contest.

The Golden Eagles would close the gap down the stretch to make the final a 10 point, 88-78, Spartan win.

The win improves Trinity Western to 6-13, while the loss drops the John Brown to 11-3.

The Spartans will finish up their California Tour today at San Diego Christian in San Diego, while the Golden Eagles will start Sooner Athletic Conference play on Thursday, Jan. 3, hosting Oklahoma City.
