December 23, 2012, Victoria, BC – The Oak Bay Bays Senior Boys basketball team capped off an undefeated tournament by defeating the St. Michaels University School (SMUS) Blue Jags 60-56 in the final of the Gary Taylor Invitational at the Oak Bay gym Saturday evening.
The final was a nail-biter of a game, with the Jags holding a slim 53-52 lead with just over 4 minutes to play, but a key three-pointer by Noah Harris and clutch free-throw shooting by Oak Bay’s Liam Horne clinched the 4-point win for the Bays.
Horne, who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, finished the final with 18 points, while Jake Miller added 14. For SMUS, Keilor Totz led the way with 15, while towering centre Mac Catto added 11.
The Bays reached the final in undefeated fashion after opening wins against Lambrick Park (78-71) and Vancouver College (77-62). SMUS took a similar path, defeating Saskatchewan’s Aden Bowman 62-53 in their opener and then defeating another Saskatchewan team, Campbell Collegiate, 68-49.
In other action, Vancouver College captured the bronze medal in a rout of Campbell Collegiate, while Lambrick Park finished with a 48-40 win over Cowichan, who went winless in their three games. Belmont also closed with a win (59-38) over Aden Bowman to capture 5th place.
