Hawks Happenings On The Ice:

December 31, 2012, Portland OR – The Hawks host the Seattle Thunderbirds tonight in the annual New Year’s Eve game between the two teams. It’s the 18th straight year they’ve met in Portland on New Year’s Eve, and 22nd time overall.

Against Seattle on NewYear’s Eve, the Hawks are 12-8-1-0, and against all opponents Portland is 14-13-0-1-0 all-time on December 31.

With eight wins in a row and a 27-2 record in the last 29 games, the Hawks have opened a 14-point lead over the second place Spokane Chiefs in the U.S. Division, and a seven-point lead over the Kamloops Blazers for top spot in the WHL, with three games in hand on the Blazers. Portland also ranks first in the WHL in goals for (167-seven more than second place Kelowna), goals against (82 – 10 fewer than second place Edmonton) and goal differential (+85 – 19 better than second place Kelowna).

Portland’s 4-3 win over the Tri-City Americans Saturday was the 104th career victory in net for Winterhawks goaltender Mac Carruth, leaving him just one victory behind the franchise record of 105, held by Darrell May, Sr. Carruth leads the WHL this season in both goals against average (1.87) and save percentage (.933).

Hawks Happenings Off The Ice:

Fans will be able to skate with Winterhawks players on the Rose Garden ice after the game tonight. They can
bring their own skates, or rent skates from Winterhawks Skating Center in Beaverton for $10 and bring them to
the game. For fans who don’t skate, there will be bounce houses and inflatable games on the concourse before,
during and after the game. It all leads into a live countdown to midnight on the arena’s big screen, when there
will be a balloon drop, in which fans will find cash in select balloons.
