January 3, 2013, (ISN) – The Lower Island Women’s Soccer Association (LIWSA) are excited to break the ice on the traditional soccer winter break with their 5th Annual All-Star Soccer event.

Two games featuring players from all divisions will be played at Westhills Turf Field at Bear Mountain Stadium this Saturday, January 5th.

Our first game kicks-off at 12:30pm. Players from Premier and Division 1 teams were nominated by their coaches and or peers and were selected in a draft process by the All Star Coaches, including Lucian Serban of Nanaimo United FC (Div. 1) who joined the draft via Skype. Kate Hambleton-Baker was the first player selected in the draft by Serban & his co-caoch, Dan Bolton of Victoria Athletics (Premier).

The second game kicks-off at 3:00pm. Players from Division 2 and Division 3A are combined in one team and compete againstplayers from Division 3B and Over 30 Women’s teams that are combined as well. This game tends to draw out more grass roots supporters and the cheers from the stands are the loudest.

For the second year in a row, this event is in support of the Mustard Seed Food Bank. Spectators, players and volunteers are all encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to the event. Sponsors have provided prizes to all who donate to the cause.

Steve Nash Fitness World are providing complimentary 2 month fitness passes to all players, coaches & volunteers. Victoria Highlanders FC are providing recognition to game MVP’s.

Sooke Soccer Associaition’s U12 Girls will be working double-duty as they will be singing the National Anthem and spreading themselves around the field to act as ball retrievers when the ball is kicked out of play.

LIWSA encourages fans, supporters and the curious to come out and support the ladies in this free event.
