January 3, 2013, MONTREAL (ISN) – The No.2-ranked Trinity Western University Spartans swept the McGill University Martlets 3-0 in women’s volleyball exhibition play Wednesday night at Love Competition Hall at McGill University in Montreal.
The set scores for the Spartans were 25-19, 25-18 and 25-19. When the dust settled, both teams agreed to play an extra set, which McGill took 25-23.
“We played a steady solid game tonight. Alicia was outstanding game and Lauren Moncks did a good job of distributing the ball and giving our hitters a chance to score,” commented TWU head coach Ryan Hofer. “It is a good third game for us and it is nice to see us improving each game.”
The Spartans, who improved their overall record to 17-4, featured a much taller lineup, with six players measuring at over six-feet, compared to McGill, which has nobody over that height. The loss drops the Martlets to 16-14 overall.
Middle Alicia Perrin led the Spartans with seven kills at 54.5 percent efficiency and eight blocks, including five solo blocks, while outside hitter Carly Hamilton added five kills and six digs. Setter Lauren Moncks ran the TWU attack and finished the evening with 23 set assists. Marie-Christine Lapointe paced the Martlets with seven kills, 10 digs, three stuff blocks and a 2.29 passing ratio out of 3. Teammate Geneviève Plante added seven kills, eight digs and one ace.
Match Notes: TWU finished the night out blocking McGill 14.5 to 6.5…and out serving the Martlets with seven aces to two…the Spartans also had the edge in digs at 54 to 48…
