Everett Silvertips_NEW

January 5, 2013, EVERETT WA (ISN) – Reid Petryk scored two goals, including the game-winner on a penalty shot, and Austin Lotz made 33 saves to propel the Everett Silvertips over the Spokane Chiefs 3-2 Friday night at Comcast Arena.

Winning their first game of 2013 and their third straight over a U.S. Division opponent, the Silvertips also improved to 3-1since returning from the WHL’s holiday break.

Petryk’s second goal on a third-period penalty shot put Everett on top to stay, while Lotz (8-12-0-1) turned in another solid goaltending performance for his third straight win coming off a CHL Goaltender of the Week award. Josh Winquist also scored for the Silvertips, who built a 2-0 lead before Spokane eventually came back to tie it.

Everett outshot Seattle 12-10 and scored the only goal of the opening period to take a lead into the locker room. The Silvertips’ goal came after Oslanski wove through traffic and fed a pass out front to Josh Winquist, who jammed the puck behind goaltender Garrett Hughson 13:39. The Silvertips successfully killed off a penalty in the final minutes and Austin Lotz stopped all ten shots he faced.

The teams exchanged goals in the second period, with Everett increasing the lead to two early on as Kohl Bauml made a nice saucer pass across the slot to Reid Petryk, who one-timed it home for his first of the game. Spokane cut the Silvertips lead in half at 6:09 after Mike Aviani skated in through the left circle and backhanded the puck into the top corner to make it 2-1. Shots on the period were 13-5 in favor of the Chiefs.

The ‘Tips were given the first of two penalty shots after Manraj Hayer was pulled down on a breakaway during a Chiefs powerplay in the third, but Josh Winquist was stopped on the try and the score stayed 2-1. Spokane then tied the game on another powerplay when Blake Gal’s shot went off Lotz and fluttered into the net.

With the score even at two in the dying minutes of the period, Reid Petryk was hooked down on another breakaway and awarded a penalty shot of his own. This time the puck found the back of the net as Petryk ripped a low shot past Hughson’s left skate to make it 3-2 Everett. The Silvertips made that lead hold up in the final minutes to earn their second win over Spokane this year.

Shots were 35-26 in favor of Spokane through 60 minutes, with Garret Hughson (5-2-0-0) stopping 23 shots in net for the Chiefs. Everett was 3 for 4 on the penalty kill and failed to score on two powerplay opportunities.

The Silvertips will now travel to Portland to face the Winterhawks Saturday night at 7:00 pm at the Rose Garden before starting a five-game homestand. The ‘Tips return to Comcast Arena next Friday night against the Victoria Royals and Saturday night for another game against the Winterhawks.
