January 6, 2013, EVERETT WA (ISN) – The Everett Silvertips were even with Portland through two periods before the Winterhawks scored the only two goals of the third in a 5-3 defeat of the ‘Tips Saturday night at the Rose Garden.
After another close call against the Winterhawks, the Silvertips fall to 0-6 in the season series with Portland this year.
Josh Winquist and Manraj Hayer each scored a goal and assisted on another, while Connor Cox notched a pair of assists. Logan Aasman also scored his first career goal in just his third WHL game with the Silvertips, who held leads of 1-0 and 3-2 in the contest.
Everett opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal as Josh Winquist created a 2-on-1 break and fed Manraj Hayer, who cut across the slot to his backhand before depositing his seventh goal of the year. The Winterhawks answered only 37 seconds later as Troy Rutkowski’s long screened shot snuck past Austin Lotz to even things at one. Portland took its first lead on another powerplay goal just over three minutes later as Nic Petan scored on a rebound chance to give the ‘Hawks a 2-1 edge after one.
The ‘Tips evened things at two at 5:27 of the second when Winquist’s centering feed deflected off the skate of Portland defenseman Troy Rutkowski and into the net. Everett re-took the lead 50 seconds later as Logan Aasman skated the puck ahead during a ‘Tips line change and rifled a long wrist shot off the shoulder of goalie Brendan Burke and into the top corner to make it 3-2 Silvertips. The lead didn’t last however, thanks to Brendan Leipsic’s goal from the right circle during a Winterhawks rush just over a minute later. The teams went to the third tied at three, with Portland holding a narrow 25-23 shot edge.
Paul Bittner then scored twice in the final period to cement the ‘Hawks win. His first goal came off a steal in the Everett zone just 2:07 into the stanza when he sent Leipsic’s centering feed perfectly over Austin Lotz’ shoulder from the low circle. This time the Silvertips couldn’t battle back to tie the score, being outshot 12-3 in the third before Bittner scored again late in the period to complete the Portland victory.
Austin Lotz (8-13-0-1) saw his three-game win streak end despite 32 saves in the Everett net. Brendan Burke (12-3-1-0) stopped 23 shots in the win as Portland outshot the ‘Tips 37-26. The Silvertips’ powerplay drought continued with an 0 for 3 night, while the Winterhawks finished 2 for 3 on the man-advantage.
The Silvertips will now have five days off before opening a five-game homestand Friday night at Comcast Arena. The ‘Tips host the Victoria Royals Friday at 7:35 pm before facing the Winterhawks again Saturday at 7:05 pm in downtown Everett.
