January 8, 2013, EDMONTON (ISN)– Regina hockey forward Brock Appleyard and Thompson Rivers basketball star Diane Schuetzeare the Canada West Athletes of the Week.
MALE: #13 Brock Appleyard, Regina (hockey)
Second-year hockey forward Brock Appleyard was one of the catalysts for the University of Regina’s offence over the weekend as the Cougars completed a two-game home sweep over Lethbridge (1-15-2) to improve to 9-7-2 on the year.
Appleyard, out of Lundar, Man., had two assists in Friday’s 6-3 victory, including a helper on Troy Hunter’s eventual game-winning goal in the second period. On Saturday, Appleyard’s late-game heroics helped the Cougars to their second win over Lethbridge in as many nights, as he intercepted a clearing attempt with under three minutes left in regulation and fired a laser from the slot to break a late 2-2 deadlock.
Appleyard wasn’t done there, as he scored an insurance marker on the next shift to seal the win and register his first career multiple-goal game and fifth point on the season.
Regina now travels to face the University of Calgary on January 11-12.
FEMALE: #13 Diane Schuetze, Thompson Rivers (basketball)
Thompson Rivers post Diane Schuetze scored 28 points, with 15 rebound, four blocks and one steal as the WolfPack improved to 8-3 with a 91-54 win over UBC Okanagan (4-7) on Saturday in Kamloops, B.C.
Schuetze, from Vernon, B.C., is the Canada West’s top scorer (20.4 ppg) and rebounder (11.6) in 2012 – 13 and ranks among the all-time conference leaders in numerous categories.
In Saturday’s win, she was the WolfPack’s top leading scorer and rebounder for the sixth time this season and recorded her 18th career double-double, tied for seventh place on the all-time Canada West list.
The WolfPack, second in the Pacific Division and on a four-game win streak, continue their homestand this weekend with games against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns and the University of Calgary Dinos on Friday and Saturday (Jan 11-12).
