January 8, 2013, (ISN) – The first race in the Frontrunners Island Race Series – the Harriers Pioneer 8K will take place on Sunday, January 13 at 11 am. The race will start and finish at the Saanich Fairgrounds located at, 1528 Stelly’s X Road, Saanichton, BC.
The 8K is hosted by the Prairie Inn Harriers and is the first race of the Timex BC Road Running Series.
Runners can register online until midnight, Wednesday January 9 at www.vira.bc.ca, at Frontrunners, 1200 Vancouver St on Saturday January 12, or on race day. Race registration until January 9 is $25 for adults and $20 for students. Race day fees are $35 and $30 for students.
The race series is now in its 32nd year. “The Pioneer 8k is always a fantastic kick-off to the new year and for the series. We have large numbers in the race and it is always a competitive field.” says Cathy Noel, President of the Vancouver Island Runners’ Association, the non-profit organization that coordinates the series. “The race gives everyone an opportunity to test their fitness, meet up with familiar faces and set goals for 2013. I hope to see both new and old faces at the start line on January 13th.”
In 2012 the overall series was won by Sean Chester (Aspire Running) with Care Nelson (Frontrunners Athletic Club) winning the female category. The masters men was won by Vince Brotherston (Comox Valley Road Runners) and the top female master was Nancy Baxendale (Prairie Inn Harriers).The Prairie Inn Harriers, Victoria won the club standings followed by Comox Valley Road Runners and Frontrunners Athletic Club.
Introduced last year, the Frontrunners Green Jersey will be awarded to the fastest male and female sprinter over the last 100m for both the under 40 and over 40 age categories. The Frontrunners Yellow Jersey will be awarded to the overall male and female winner of each event in recognition of them attaining a victory in these highly competitive events.
The Frontrunners Milers Club will reward runners with an exclusive custom designed shirt as they reach mileage milestones attained during the Race Series. The program will take into account the last six years of the Series, and reward runners as they reach the 500km, 1000km and 1500km milestones.
Eight races make up the Frontrunners Island Race Series. The Harriers Pioneer 8K will be followed by Cobble Hill 10K on January 27; Cedar 12K on February 10, Hatley Castle 8K on February 24, Synergy Health Management Ltd Bazan Bay 5K on March 10, Comox Valley RV Half Marathon on March 24, Merville 15K on April 7, and Sooke River 10K on April 21. Synergy Health Management Ltd Bazan Bay 5K and the Comox Valley RV Half Marathon are also part of the Timex BC Series. All races are sanctioned by BC Athletics.
