January 11, 2013, Victoria,BC (ISN) – The Belmont Bulldogs continued their winning ways in local AAA high school basketball action at home against the Reynolds Roadrunners, almost doubling their opponent by a final score of 77-43 Thursday evening.
In the first quarter the Bulldogs starting guard Kane Johnston ran their high powered offense at the 1-4 Road Runners, testing the Road Runners bigs with an inside the paint attack led by #16 Erik Spaven. The smaller, and seemingly less experienced Road Runners would be forced to play zone defense in a gutsy attempt to control the defensive glass and counter the inside play of Spaven.

The Bulldogs, with a balanced team game would counter with the perimeter shooting of Owen Vaags, who would shoot the lights out with an 11 point first quarter performance and compliment Spaven’s 10 points. The Bulldogs would find themselves holding a comfortable 24-6 lead at the end of the first period.

As the Road Runners started to put some offensive pressure on the Bulldogs in the second quarter, Reynolds guards would find some room to create shots around Belmont’s man-to-man defense, keeping pace with the Bulldogs, scoring 14 points in the quarter to Belmont’s 20 point tally. Belmont held a comfortable 44-20 lead going into the locker room at the half.

Belmont would sharpen their game in the third quarter, showing patience, toying with the Road Runners zone defense by unselfishly passing the ball in a Nash-like fashion, working an inside-out game between Belmont’s center Spaven and the rest of the team. Spaven would add eight more points in the quarter, before sitting down with a game high 22 points and 4 blocked shots on the night. The quarter ended 65-30 in favor of the Belmont Bulldogs.

The Reynolds Road Runners showed some grit early on in the last frame, looking to make the score look a little more respectable by scraping for the loose balls and taking it to the rack. Reynolds went on an 8-0 run with about six minutes to go, but the damage was all but done, as the Bulldogs would finish the night with another solid game and a 77-43 win for the books. Belmont’s Owen Vaags would be the second leading scorer for the Bulldogs with 17 points on the night.
