January 10, 2013, Saskatoon, SK (ISN) – Hoping to have a strong second half to continue a push into the playoffs for the sixth straight season, the University of Saskatchewan Huskie women’s hockey team plays host to rival the University of Alberta Pandas.
The Pandas visit Saskatoon’s Rutherford Rink Friday and Saturday.
Entering the weekend, the Huskies sit in the final playoff position with a 6-8-4 record. With just 10 games remaining, including the two against Alberta, and both Lethbridge Pronghorns (6-9-3) and Mount Royal Cougars (6-10-2) biting at their heels every point counts.
Alberta enters the weekend in third place with a 12-6-0 record. The Pandas opened the second half of the season with a sweep over Mount Royal.
Since 1997-98, the Huskies are just 7-47 against the Pandas.
Scoring a league-second best 48 goals as a team, the Pandas have spread their scoring around in 2012-13. Just Karla Bourke (eight goals, 10 assists) appears in the top 20 in scoring in the Canada West. Including Bourke 13 different Pandas have scored multiple times in the season.
Fifth-year veterans Cara Wooster and Danny Stone have been the offensive sparks for the Huskies, sitting second and third in scoring in the Canada West. Captain Wooster has tallied 10 goals and 12 assists, while Stone has 10 goals and 10 assists. Cami Wooster has also helped with the Huskies’ offence with four goals and 12assists.
Rookie goalie Cassidy Hendricks has played in 15 games for the Huskies posting a .916 save percentage and a 2.51 goals against average. Michala Jeffries has started 14 games for the Pandas recording a .927 save percentage and a 1.76 GAA.
