After Saskatchewan dominated the first set of the match 25-14, Thompson Rivers found their stride and kept the second and third games close.
Thompson Rivers matched the Huskies point-for-point in the second set until the WolfPack pulled ahead 14-12. In the first half of the set, the teams were tied 10 times. Saskatchewan scored the next four points to be the first to the technical timeout on kills by Bryan Fraser, Robert Graham and Matthew Busse. Thompson Rivers kept pulling close, but Saskatchewan was able to keep the led and a quick attack down the middle by Braden McLean won the set 25-23.
After once again matching each other point-for-point, the Huskies Robert Graham took the lead back for the Huskies with a quick attack down the middle at 16-15. Saskatchewan kept the lead until TRU was able to tie the game at 22. A service error gave the Huskies back the ball for match point. But the Huskies couldn’t dig up a WolfPack attack to close the game. Thompson Rivers forced extra points but lost 27-25 on an error.
Fraser led the Huskies with 11 kills and seven digs on the night. Busse added nine kills, while McLean added another eight. Setter Chris Gilbert recorded 37 assists and libero Jeff Grant had seven digs.
Brad Gunter led the WolfPack in the match with 15 kills. Jacob Tricarico added another nine. Tricarcio also recorded three stuff blocks and one assisted block.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 8-5, while the WolfPack drop to 5-8. Thompson Rivers have now won just two of their last nine matches.
Saskatchewan defeats the Thompson Rivers WolfPack 3-0: 25-14, 25-23, 27-25.
The two teams will battle again Saturday night at the PAC. Match time is 8 p.m. It can be watched on www.canadawest.tv
