January 12, 2013, Victoria BC (ISN) – The Camosun College Chargers basketball teams collected two exciting wins in today’s PACWEST action, resulting in a weekend sweep for the women and a split for the men.
The Camosun Chargers women’s team posted its fifth win of the season with today’s exciting victory against the PACWEST’s No. 2 team, the Douglas College Royals. Both teams had a slow start, with each scoring only 11 points at the end of the first quarter.
At the end of the third, the Royals were ahead by 7, Camosun came back in the third, outscoring their opponents 16-11 and closing the gap to 2. The Chargers turned up the heat in the final quarter. The Chargers took the lead for the first time in the game (43-42) with only two minutes remaining on the clock.
Camosun’s Melissa Van Dyk sealed the deal with a foul shot to edge the Chargers to a 44-42 win. Second-year wing/point Ella Goldschmid led Camosun with 14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal.

Despite trailing their opponents for the majority of the first quarter, the Chargers men managed to edge out a 24-22 lead before the final 10 seconds of the first frame elapsed.
Douglas came back in the second to outscore Camosun 24-17, stealing the lead 46-41 to end the first half. The Chargers took advantage of a solid third quarter to regain control of the game and although both teams scored relatively even in the fourth. Camosun maintained a strong position at both ends of the court coming out victorious and the sound of the buzzer.
Today’s win against the Royals puts Camosun at 3-8. Third-year point guard Jordan Elvedahl (Stelly’s) was the high man of the evening posting 16 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals. Second-year forward Trevor Schuermann (Winnipeg) had 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
