January 13, 2013, REGINA, SK (ISN) – The University of Regina’s women’s volleyball team lost in four sets to the UBC Okanagan Heat on Saturday afternoon as both teams returned to the Canada West schedule at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

“Great to get this first win after the break, especially on the road,” noted Heat head coach Steve Manuel. “We were a bit rusty but played good scramble type volleyball. Myrte was solid attacking on the left side today, but it was a true team effort.”

None of the four sets were close, as UBC Okanagan took 25-16 and 25-18 wins in the first two sets to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. The Cougars replied with a 25-15 win in the third set to get back in it, but UBC Okanagan hit .353 as a team en route to a match-clinching 25-14 win in the fourth.

“We will need to prepare for Regina to bounce back and come out swinging tomorrow,” continued Manuel. “We will continue to key on their top scorers and no doubt they will try to contain ours.”

Outside hitter Myrte Schön (4th year, Langley, BC) had a team-high 14 kills for UBC Okanagan and led all players with a .355 hitting percentage. She added 10 digs for a double-double, while outside hitter Alexandra Basso (5th year, Kelowna, BC) chipped in with nine digs, seven kills, and a match-high six blocks. Rookie setter Emily Oxland (North Vancouver, BC) dished out 30 assists and added three service aces.

Both outside hitter Desiree Ates (4th year, Regina, SK) and outside hitter Tori Glynn (2nd year, Prince Albert, SK) had double-doubles for the Cougars in the loss. Ates had 15 kills and 10 digs, while Glynn collected 10 kills and matched Ates with 10 digs. Second-year setter Meagan Lane (Regina, SK) had 30 assists for the U of R.

UBC Okanagan hit .170 as a team in the win as the Heat improve their Canada West record to 8-5. The Cougars fall to 3-10 on the season with the loss.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon at the CKHS following the conclusion of the men’s match. First serve is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Pacific time.
