January 13, 2013 Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Major Midget South Island Royals were downed by the Vancouver North East Chiefs 10-4 in an early one-sided match up Sunday morning in the last game of a back to back meeting at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena.

Goalie Jesse Jenks (3.34 GAA) of the SI Royals would get the nod against the Chiefs Nick McBride (3.15 GAA).

The Royals were searching to make amends Sunday after an 8-0 shutout loss to the Chiefs, looking to keep ahead of their 8th place nemesis the North Island Silver Tips, and hoping to put some distance between them with a win over the 4th place Chiefs.

The Royals would break the ice early in the first period at 17:50, when #12 Brodie Smith beat the Chiefs goalie Nick McBride at his door step to take the early lead. However, the lead would be short-lived as the Chiefs relentless offense answered the assault 23 seconds later, scoring 3 goals in just 28 seconds.

Goalie Jesse Jenks of the Royals was replaced with stand in goalie, Markus Daly (4.72 GGA). Repeatedly flirting with disaster, the SI Royals had trouble clearing the puck from their own end leaving the first period down 5-1.

With the opening of the second period, the Royals did not have the answer the home town fans were hoping for as the Chiefs continued to drive, adding 3 more goals in the second period. It was not until the Royals answered with Jordan Martin #11, taking a pass from Brodie Smith to beat McBride, putting the puck in the back of the net for the second goal of the morning.

The Chiefs came down hard and before the end of the second period, the Chiefs solidified their lead ending the period with a score of 10-2.

With heads held high, the South Island Royals came out with grit and determination, seemingly energized and ready to tackle the third period.

Hayden Hopkins #15, streaked down the left wing, to put the puck on teammate Jack Rachwalski’s stick in front of the Chiefs goalie, beating McBride glove side at the 17:06 mark.

After a tipping penalty by Chiefs defenseman Lucas Johansen, the Royals found themselves on a power play and did not disappoint.  Cole Pickup #21 (2013 Major Midget All-star selection) with help form Hopkins and Smith scored off the cross bar with 6:50 remaining.

With the South Island Royals scoring the only two goals of the period, the game would end with a final score of 10-4 in favor of the NE Chiefs.

The South Island Royals are scheduled to play their next home game Sunday, January 27th at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre when they host the North Island Silvertips.
