January, 15, 2013, EDMONTON, AB (ISN) – UBC Okanagan volleyball outside hitter Riley McFarland and Jessica Renfrew of the Victoria Vikes basketball team are the Canada West Athletes of the Week.

MALE: #2 Riley McFarland, UBC Okanagan (volleyball)

A disappointing 0-10 first half for UBC Okanagan in its sophomore season, it may have been turned around as Riley McFarland put on his cape, did his best Superman impression and spurred the Heat men’s volleyball team to their first and second conference victories in a road sweep of the Regina Cougars (2-12).

McFarland a fifth year outside hitter from South Surrey, B.C. connected for 56 kills in two days powering the UBC Okanagan Heat to a four-set win on Saturday and a five-set win on Sunday.

Saturday McFarland ended up with career high 26 kills, seven blocks, and five digs and hit .352 on the afternoon. On Sunday, the fifth year outside hitter once again strapped on the cape and put down a new career high with 30 kills in the Heat’s second straight victory.

With Sunday’s performance Riley McFarland become the first Canada West player to collect 30 kills in a single match since Thompson Rivers’ Kevin Tillie tallied 36 back on Nov. 13, 2010. McFarland also had 16 digs to go along with his 30 kills and hit .348 in the win.

With the two wins the Heat move up to 2-12, and will return home to host the struggling Calgary Dinos, also 2-12, next weekend (Jan 18-19) at the UBC’s Okanagan campus gymnasium in Kelowna, B.C.
