Sherbrooke’s Hasseni, Laurier’s Allin honoured

Januaryar 16, 2013, OTTAWA (CIS) – Roxane Hasseni, a volleyball player from the University of Sherbrooke, and Max Allin, a basketball player from Wilfrid Laurier University, are the CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Jan. 13, 2013.

Hasseni, a second-year political science student from Paris, France, helped the Vert & Or improve to 13-3 in conference play thanks to a four-set win over McGill, last year’s CIS bronze medallist, and a thrilling 3-2 victory against Montreal, ranked third in the country prior to the contest. The 6-foot middle blocker was stellar against the Martlets on Friday with 25 points, 18 kills and a .342 kill percentage, all game highs. She was once again solid on Sunday against the powerful Carabins as she amassed 15 points, 10 kills and six blocks to help Sherbrooke join Laval atop the RSEQ standings.

UPEI hockey player Marie-Soleil Deschênes, York volleyball player Brandie Wilkerson and Victoria basketball player Jessica Renfrew were also nominated for the women’s award.

Allin, a fourth-year arts student from Chatham, Ont., averaged a remarkable 35.5 points per contest last week, including a record-breaking performance on Saturday. The 6-foot-4 guard kicked off the Hawks’ two-game set last Wednesday with a 28-point, 10-assist double-double in a 112-92 upset win over No. 8-ranked Windsor. The CIS scoring leader (26.3 ppg) then exploded for a single-game school record 43 points on Saturday in a 94-88 loss to Guelph, including 13-of-20 shooting from the floor, 6-of-10 from three-point range and 11-of-12 from the free throw line.

UPEI hockey player Wayne Savage, UQTR hockey player Pierre-Olivier Morin and UBC Okanagan volleyball player Riley McFarland were the other male nominees.
